Sanchez Says US Election Results Signal Decline of Far-Right Political Wave

(MENAFN) Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said Wednesday that US voters had rejected political policies associated with "hatred, sexism and climate change denial" in the country's midterm elections, describing the results as evidence that the far-right movement was losing momentum.

In a post on X, Sanchez argued that the outcome reflected public opposition to policies that deepen poverty and protect the interests of privileged groups.

"Yesterday, American society voted against policies that only impoverish. Against hatred. Against sexism. Against climate change denial and against the privileges of the elites," he wrote.

The Spanish leader compared the US results with recent political developments in Brazil, expressing confidence that a similar change would eventually take place in Spain.

"It happened in Brazil. It has just happened in the US. And it will happen soon in Spain," he said, referring to Spain's Nov. 29 elections.

Sanchez also criticized opposition People's Party leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo and Vox leader Santiago Abascal, arguing that the political momentum they sought to capitalize on was weakening.

"The far-right wave that Feijoo and Abascal are trying to jump on is no longer growing: it is crumbling," Sanchez wrote.

His comments followed Tuesday's US midterm elections, held on Nov. 3, which featured races for congressional seats and numerous other public offices across the country.

With vote counting still underway in several contests, US media projections indicated that Democrats were on course to secure 53 seats in the Senate, compared with 42 for Republicans.

Democrats were also projected to capture at least 218 seats in the House of Representatives, giving them the majority in the chamber, which has 435 members.
