France Considers Further Curfews After Protest Clashes

(MENAFN) French authorities are considering expanding localized nighttime restrictions following violent incidents during weekend demonstrations over rising living costs, Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said Tuesday.

Lecornu indicated that additional measures could be introduced in areas experiencing unrest, noting that targeted curfews "contributed to calm" overnight. In a statement published on X, he said further restrictions could be announced Tuesday evening "where the situation requires it."

Local prefects will determine whether additional curfews are necessary in coordination with municipal mayors, according to the prime minister. Limited nighttime restrictions were already introduced Monday in several locations, including Paris and Lyon.

Marseille is also preparing to enforce a nighttime curfew for minors in selected districts, beginning Tuesday at 10 pm and continuing until 5 am at least through Friday, according to reports. Mayor Benoit Payan said the measure would be limited to commercial zones that have experienced looting or are considered vulnerable to further incidents.

Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin announced that 149 people had been imprisoned by midday Tuesday, revising an earlier count of 67. Authorities had previously reported detaining 2,513 people in connection with the unrest.

Darmanin also disclosed earlier Tuesday that approximately 50 judicial investigations had been launched. Speaking to French media, he dismissed calls for a state of emergency, arguing that authorities could reestablish public order through a firm response without curtailing the individual freedoms of the wider population.
