EU Prioritizes Online Child Safety as Age Verification System Nears Launch
The bloc’s technology leadership has indicated that the upcoming age verification application is already fully operational from a technical standpoint and will rely on cryptographic methods designed to keep users’ personal information secure.
“We do not want platforms to scan our passport or face,” she said. “But we need to make sure that all the children in the EU are protected.”
She also noted that pilot testing is already underway in seven leading countries, with plans to establish a coordinated EU-wide framework to ensure consistent implementation across all member states.
In addition, she emphasized that the EU is increasing pressure on digital platforms to take greater responsibility for harmful content and user safety online.
"Europe will not tolerate that platforms make money at the expense of our kids," she said, referring to enforcement actions taken against platforms linked to exploitative tools and content involving sexual abuse material and abusive image manipulation features.
She further highlighted regulatory steps taken against TikTok over concerns related to “addictive design” elements, including features such as infinite scrolling, autoplay, and personalized recommendation systems.
"The message is clear: In Europe, TikTok will have to change its fundamental design," she said.
