Survey Shows Most Europeans Favor Stronger EU Unity

(MENAFN) A recent survey indicates that European citizens are increasingly concerned about security and safety amid growing geopolitical tensions, with 89% expressing support for greater EU unity to address global threats, according to a European Parliament statement on Wednesday.

The Eurobarometer survey highlights that security issues dominate public concern across the bloc. Conflicts near EU borders were cited by 72% of respondents as a major worry, followed by terrorism (67%), cyberattacks from non-EU countries (66%), climate-related natural disasters (66%), and uncontrolled migration flows (65%).

In response to these threats, Europeans are calling for stronger collective action. Nearly nine in ten citizens believe EU member states should act more cohesively, while 86% want the EU to play a more influential role internationally. Additionally, 73% said the union requires more resources to effectively address threats on a global scale.

The survey also points to a broader sense of uncertainty: over half of respondents (52%) said they feel pessimistic about the world’s future, and 39% expressed doubt about the EU’s trajectory. Despite these concerns, personal optimism remains relatively high, with 76% confident about their own and their families’ future.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola commented that the results underscore citizens’ desire for a proactive and united Europe. "Geopolitical tensions shape Europeans’ daily sense of security. Citizens expect the European Union to protect, be prepared and act together. That is exactly what a stronger and more self-assertive Europe must deliver," she said.
