Russian envoy tells Europe not to “provoke their daddy” over tariffs

(MENAFN) A senior Russian official on Saturday mocked European countries, cautioning them against antagonizing Washington following US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose new tariffs on several European states amid tensions linked to Greenland.

Kirill Dmitriev, a presidential envoy and head of Russia’s sovereign investment fund, issued a sharp warning, telling Europe not to “provoke their daddy,” according to reports. Commenting on Trump’s move, he wrote: “Trump slaps 10% tariffs on the UK, Denmark, France, Germany, Finland, Netherlands, and Norway over their 'dangerous game' of sending military to Greenland.”

He went on to claim that the tariffs equate to “about 1% per soldier sent to Greenland.” Dmitriev also alluded to earlier remarks in which NATO’s secretary general was said to have referred to Trump as “daddy,” using the reference to further ridicule European leaders, according to reports.

The comments followed Trump’s announcement earlier on Saturday that the United States would introduce new tariffs on imports from eight European countries beginning on February 1, with rates set to rise sharply in June. The US president cited “national security” concerns tied to Greenland as justification for the measures.

In a separate public statement, Trump specified that goods imported from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Britain, the Netherlands, and Finland would initially face a 10% tariff, which would increase to 25% starting June 1. He said the tariffs would remain in effect until an agreement is reached for the “complete and total purchase of Greenland.”

Trump has repeatedly argued that the United States must take control of Greenland from Denmark, insisting that the autonomous Arctic territory is essential to Washington’s “national security,” according to reports.
