EU Parliament calls on officials to take immediate action to stop genocide on Gaza
On Tuesday, representatives from the Left, Greens/European Free Alliance, and the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats issued a joint appeal to the heads of the EU’s major institutions. In a letter addressed to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Antonio Costa, and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, the lawmakers criticized the bloc’s failure to respond to the escalating violence in Gaza.
They urged the EU to support an immediate and lasting ceasefire, suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement, and implement a total arms embargo on Israel.
The letter further demanded sanctions against specific Israeli officials, full restoration of funding to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), and a prohibition on trade involving goods produced in illegal Israeli settlements.
"This situation can no longer be regarded as a mere emergency: there is clear evidence that a genocide is being committed in Gaza. The European Commission and the European Council have so far failed to respond with the urgency and resolve that our treaties, values and responsibilities demand," the lawmakers said.
They also highlighted the rise in settler violence across the West Bank and pointed to Israeli efforts to establish permanent control over Gaza, describing such plans as direct violations of international law.
According to the signatories, even though the EU’s diplomatic arm has acknowledged that Israel has breached terms of its association agreement with the bloc, the agreement remains in force and no punitive measures have been taken to date.
