EU Parliament Leaders Demand Action on Gaza
In a collective letter directed to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Antonio Costa, and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, they condemned the bloc’s persistent passivity in the face of Israel’s continuing assaults.
The leaders called on the EU to support an urgent and lasting ceasefire, suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement, and implement a full arms embargo against Israel.
Additionally, the letter demanded targeted sanctions on Israeli officials, the restoration of full funding to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), and a prohibition on trade involving goods from unlawful Israeli settlements.
The lawmakers emphasized, “This situation can no longer be regarded as a mere emergency: there is clear evidence that a genocide is being committed in Gaza. The European Commission and the European Council have so far failed to respond with the urgency and resolve that our treaties, values and responsibilities demand.”
They further highlighted the increase in settler violence in the West Bank alongside Israeli intentions to permanently occupy Gaza, describing these actions as blatant violations of international law.
While the EU’s foreign service has acknowledged that Israel has breached the EU-Israel Association Agreement, the leaders pointed out that the agreement remains in effect and no sanctions have yet been enacted.
