EU considers imposing sanctions on China for backing Russia’s army

(MENAFN) The European Union is considering sanctions on China over its alleged support for Russia’s military, a media organization reported Monday, citing a European diplomat. The move comes amid growing Western efforts to pressure Moscow’s key economic partners following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022.

Beijing has declined to participate in the Western-led sanctions against Russia and has instead deepened its economic relationship with Moscow. While China has consistently called for a diplomatic resolution to the war, it has faced increasing scrutiny from the West for what some claim is indirect military support.

The latest shift in EU sentiment appears to have been triggered by a July media investigation that cited customs data and anonymous officials. The report claimed Chinese firms had exported materials to Russia that could be used for military purposes, including components for drones, radar systems, and fighter jets.

“The report is accurate and it shows China is escalating its role, both quantitatively and qualitatively,” a diplomat told a media organization. “The conflict would look very different right now” without China's involvement, the source added.

In response, China has rejected the allegations. Speaking at the UN Security Council earlier this month, Chinese envoy Geng Shuang dismissed similar claims made by the U.S., calling them “false” and “completely unacceptable.” He argued that China’s trade with Russia is legal and highlighted the continued commercial ties between Russia and both the U.S. and EU.

The pressure on Beijing comes as U.S. lawmakers push for more aggressive action. A new bill introduced in Congress would require President Donald Trump's administration to sanction Chinese individuals and entities accused of supporting Russia’s defense industry.

The EU has not yet made a final decision on the sanctions, but any move would likely raise tensions with China and potentially impact broader EU-China trade relations.
